Kristen Ma, co-owner and marketing

Kristen was drawn to the world of skincare at age ten when she started with her own skin ailment: chronic acne. Desperate for a cure for her acne, she spent years of searching and researching the cosmetic industry. It is this search that she attributes most of her knowledge of cause and effect of skincare products. And during this time she discovered the healing and decongesting properties of natural skincare through her personal experience.

Kristen completed her esthetics diploma during her last year of high school and enrolled in university as a business major. But it was soon apparent that holistic beauty was where her passion was and she decided to travel abroad.

Since then she has worked in some of the most elite spas in Australia giving her insight to different effects of climate and ethnicity on skin conditions. Upon her return, Kristen has put her full energies into Pure + simple as she realized "it is so essential to stand behind the company and products you promote".

She has been featured and quoted by Fashion Magazine, Flare, NOW magazine, Glow, The Toronto Star, Sweet Spot and Wish Magazine.
See Media Section.

She has also appeared on Shop 411, Toronto Shops and as the facial consultant for make over show Diva on a Dime.

Kristen has also written beauty articles for Vitality Magazine, B Magazine, Jasmine Magazine. Mc Arthur and Company recently published her holistic beauty book Beauty: Pure + Simple.

"We cannot just look at clients as skin. But as holistic human beings. We need to look at their skin, but also their lifestyles, their internal health, their emotional states + their tactile + fragrance preferences. Skincare is not like shopping for clothes. You don't see something you like + try it on in a fitting room. Skincare is so specific + sometimes takes time to see results. When you browse around a beauty or cosmetic store, they are just these mystery bottles of which you prey will work. That's why we're here. Not as sales people, but consultants + guides."

hi kristen-
just did a great lumilift facial with you guys and am contemplating
doing it regularly (yikes-big $ committment).i did buy the Pure+simple -
Refining Peach Enzyme Treatment and not sure if it is to be rinsed off/feel like
an exfoliant/how to use it etc.
thanks!
kristen  - re: randie   |2010-02-08 09:47:35
I am glad you liked the Lumilift -- it is a wonderful treatment.

As for the
peach enzyme -- you would rinse it off after 2-5 minutes and apply serum and
moisturizer. This is only done after evening cleansing.
LK  - jurlique   |2010-02-07 13:48:20
is jurlique organic?
kristen   |2010-02-07 13:56:43
Yes, it definitely is.
Lanna  - Galvanic Spa   |2010-02-07 13:03:45
Hi,
I am wondering about your opinion of the Galvanic Spa by Nuskin. I'm
thinking about using it and then using Clayton Shagal afterward (gel and
moisturizer). I have wrinkle-prone skin, otherwise normal. Any advice?
Rohini  - Azulene   |2010-02-05 13:10:25
Hi Kristen

Is Azulene and chamomille essential oil the same thing? Thanks
kristen  - re: Rohini   |2010-02-08 12:12:54
They are very closely related. Azulene in its natural form is the active
anti-inflammatory agent that is present in chamomile essential oils. German
Chamomile essential oil contains much higher concentrations of azulene than
other types of chamomile, and this is what gives it a deep blue colour (You will
find this in Pure + Simple's Sensitive Pitta Face Oil). Chamomile essential
oils contain azulene as well as other parts of the chamomile flower that lend
additional aromatherapeutic and soothing properties to the oil.
kristen  - re: Rohini (continued)   |2010-02-08 12:19:02
Often skincare products contain 'Azulene' as an ingredient - in this form,
azulene is chemically extracted from chamomile and is used as a concentrated
soothing agent and blue pigment. In this form it is not as natural as pure
chamomile essential oil because of the chemicals used to extract it. Many of
Pure + Simple's products contain German Chamomile essential oil in order to take
full advantage of chamomile's soothing properties, while ensuring high
concentrations of azulene are preserved during the extraction process.
Helen  - skin care-medication side effects   |2010-02-04 10:37:45
Hello

I am beginning a new medication which has facial skin rash as a possible
side effect.

Do you have products which will help me in terms of moisturzing as
well as products for coverage?
kristen  - re: Helen   |2010-02-08 12:12:06
Hi Helen,

For daytime I recommend you try Pure + Simple's Flawless
Complexion. This tinted moisturizer will soothe and nourish your skin during
the day, while providing you with excellent coverage. For evening I recommend
you use Pure + Simple Skin Drink. It is unscented and will provide you with
soothing protection overnight.

You do have some degree of control over the
severity of the rash that your new medication may cause. It is important for
you to start using a soothing cleanser, toner and serum (underneath your
moisturizer) that will nourish your skin while providing you with
anti-inflammatory support to reduce the effects that the medication may have on
your skin.
kristen  - re: Helen (continued)   |2010-02-08 12:12:19
Pure + Simple's Sensitive Cleansing Milk, Organic Chamomile and Collagen +
Elastin Plus are excellent products for you to incorporate into your regime
because they are very effective at calming and healing irritated and sensitive
skin, and will also improve your skin's immunity and make you less susceptible
to a reaction. Another great product for anyone dealing with inflamed and
irritated skin is Pure + Simple's Cucumber Mask. Skin rashes have a lot of heat
and this mask is great for quickly cooling inflamed skin and reducing redness.
It is perfect for use before work or an event when you skin is irritated.
Paula  - regarding skincare for pre acne   |2010-02-03 13:39:32
Good afternoon, nice to find you here, I was wondering do you make all of the
products on site? If not would you be interested in a new vendor? thank you for
your time, best regards, Paula
kristen  - re: regarding skincare for pre acne   |2010-02-06 12:02:00
Hi Paula,

Our Pure + Simple line of products is made here in Toronto. We also
offer several different natural product lines from around the world. At this
time we are not actively looking for a new line, but you are more than welcome
to email your suggestion to spa@pureandsimple.ca.
kristen  - re: Mary   |2010-02-03 11:31:47
Mary,

I definitely think we could assist you in your journey to clear skin
through holistic health. Candida is often related to acne as they both are due
to Kapha and Pitta -- dampness with inflammation. Not all acne is damp - but
since you have cysts (which are fluid filled pustules) you probably do.

If
you tell me which location you are closest to, I can recommend someone for you.
I can also recommend naturopathic doctors etc. if you want to start to see
someone to fully examine your internal organs and systems.
Mary   |2010-02-03 12:27:08
Hi Kristen, thank you for your reply. The King location is probably the best
one for me. Although I'd love to see a naturopath, I dont think its within my
means right now. But I would appreciate any other recommendations you or your
consultants could provide.
kristen  - re: Mary   |2010-02-03 14:13:47
I suggest you see Amy at our King location as she also is a doctor of natural
medicine. Be explicit about your Candida and desire to know more about your
internal body.
Mary   |2010-02-03 11:28:48
I have been suffering from acne for approximately the past 10 years, i am 28
years old. I have various types. i have little bumps all over my face, some
cysts (quite painful) from time to time, and sometimes pus-filled acne.

I
have tried many conventional treatments with little improvement. I have been
doing a lot of research over the past few years and feel that this problem is
probably internal as well as external. For a while I thought I suffered from
Candida (have you heard of this?) as I have other symptoms of this as well. I
was seeing a dermatologist until recently but have stoped as i think the topical
antibiotics (and oral at one point) and injections are ultimately making the
problem worse.

While researching ayurveda, I came upon your site. I was
wondering what help your spa can offer. Ive looked at your website and am
interested in coming in for a consultation. Honestly, do you think I would a

RaVon  - Sunscreen   |2010-02-01 15:40:08
Hi,

I am interested in your Pure & Simple SPF 30 Sunscreens for daily facial
usage. I have normal skin and don't like the feel of anything heavy on the
face. I also don't prefer fragranced products. Which of your products (Sensitive
Skin, Anti-Aging, or Oily) would you recommend? Which leaves less of a
whiteness? Thank you.
kristen  - re: Ravon   |2010-02-01 17:11:42
All of our scnet come from the ingredients that the product contains. The least
fragranced would probably be the sensitive formula, but it does have chamomile
in it which you may smell. They all have the same texture for the same SPF
factor. If you apply only half a pump on moisturized skin, you should not have
a white residue.
jim   |2010-02-01 11:18:40
I have rosacea with acme and my Dermatology said not to use moisturizer on my
face ,why did he tell me that. right now i'm using toner aqua glycolic then
sodium sulfacetamide 10% and sulfur 5% suspension and i take doxycycline
100
twice a day
kristen  - re: Jim   |2010-02-01 17:09:55
Many dermatologists believe in using only non-comedogenic products and therefore
are against using moisturizer. We believe that moisturizer is essential to heal
the skin when it is this sensitive. If you use natural ingredients it should not
be comedogenic bc they do not contain clogging petroleum. I suggest a rich
moisturizer unless you are so inflammed that you react to oils. Do you have
papules or just redness?
jim   |2010-02-03 12:14:56
I have redness with papules
kristen  - re: Jim   |2010-02-08 12:10:53
It sounds like you may have Papulopustular Rosacea. Not moisturizing your skin
will aggravate the condition and actually makes your skin more susceptible to
break outs. I would recommend you try Pure + Simple's Skin Drink. This is a
medium-weight moisturizer that is non-comedogenic so it will be great for
soothing and nourishing your skin without aggravating your break outs. When you
have a chance to pick this up either in-store or online, please ask for a sample
of Sensitive Pitta Face Oil for you to try using at night. If your skin can
handle oil, I would recommend you consider adding this to your regime to really
nourish your skin and soothe the rosacea.
kristen  - re: Jim (continued)   |2010-02-08 12:11:18
Furthermore, using a cooling and hydrating serum underneath your moisturizer
will also be excellent for strengthening your skin's immunity and reducing your
tendency to break out and react from the rosacea. Try Collagen + Elastin or
Soothing Mimosa Emulsion. Both are light-weight and have helped a lot of people
who have suffered from your condition in the past.

I also recommend you use
Pure + Simple's Detoxifying Clay Mask to reduce the discomfort of the papules.
The Green Clay will purify your skin and also help to reduce the heat and
redness from the rosacea.
Rohini  - facial oils   |2010-01-30 13:35:13
Hi Kristen

Which one of your oils do you recommend to minimize facial
redness?

Thanks
kristen  - re: Rohini   |2010-02-01 10:20:47
I would recommend the Pitta Sensitive Face Oil. Its excellent for inflammation.
Kathryn  - Pregnant - break outs   |2010-01-29 17:38:48
Hi Kristin,
For the past few years I've used Proactiv. I'm pregnant with my
second and want to avoid the chemicals in Proactiv (I know it's not good for
me/baby!). My skin is prone to breakouts....red or white small bumps on my
forehead and painful cystic acne on my chin. My skin (especially my forehead)
tends to be very oily.
Wondering if any of your products are safe to use
during pregnancy?
kristen  - re: Kathryn   |2010-02-01 10:23:28
We have many products which our pregnant clients use and are perfectly safe.
But what I woudl do even if you coe in and switch to our line is to wean
yourself off of Proactiv. You would take yourself off one one product at a time
-- I find this helps clients not break out massively. When your skin stops
being peeled and dried out it can sometimes freak out - and throw your hormonal
changes in the mix and you may have an issue. That's what I would recommend.
Any of our estheticians can help you sort through our products for ones best for
your skin and pregnancy.
Kimmie   |2010-01-29 16:24:53
Hi Kristen,
I LOVE YOUR STORE! Thank you for introducing the women of Toronto
to holistic skin care. I love how you say you have no buyers for holistic
cosmetic derm's. That's insane! My question is, I have moles/freckles on my face
(5 approx ball point pen size) and I'd like them removed. I've tried every skin
lightener on the market and NOTHING works! I also have a poc mark (hole in skin
from chicken pox) that I would like filled. I tried Restylane many years ago but
it didn't work. HELP!
kristen  - re: Kimmie   |2010-02-01 10:27:06
Thanks Kimmie! We are always thrilled when people are as enthusiastic about
holistic beauty as we are! In terms of your freckles, the easiest tried and
true way would be to get IPL done. You can do this through us or a derm -- just
make sure the machine is new and a dermatologist grade make (we use the Starlux
Palomar which is one of the bets on the market). As for the poc mark, its
really hard. I'm surprised a filler didn't work. Depending on how big/deep it
is, you may be able to laser it. Though whther you do IPL or Lasers, I
recommend you make sure your skincare if very nourishing and soothing.
Philly  - Acne around chin area   |2010-01-26 18:34:04
Hi Kristen,

I recently stopped using pro-active because it was dehydrating my
skin severly and after using it for 2 years but still no actual change was
beginning to frustrate me. I was recommended by a friend to come to Pure +
Simple and thus far have been quite happy with the information I have received,
however; I continue to have alot of acne come around my chine and mouth area :(
My diet has complete changed over the last month...I excerise about 4-6 times a
week, drink atleast 2 litres of water a day; have stopped drinking milk and
yogurt and cheese...(is soy okay though?) As well as took in your
recommendations for someone who is in the kapha range...however the pimples are
still there. Is there anything else I should be doing?...should I come in for a
consultation? What more am I missing?
kristen  - re: Philly   |2010-01-29 10:56:49
What do the pimples look like? Are they red and full of pus? Are the cystic and
painful?

I prefer you drink almond milk than soy milk - but in small amounts
it should be fine.

I am trying to figure out the quality of your blemishes,
because it is in the hormonal area of the face...
Philly  - re: Kristen   |2010-02-04 07:19:30
The pimples are initially red and then come out into huge whiteheads. I don't
pop them so they grow somewhat large and remain on my face for quite some time.
The focus is really around the bottom of my chin area sometimes coming around to
the sides of my mouth.

Any suggestions?
Shirley  - Skin bumps and redness   |2010-01-26 17:38:56
Hi kristen.

i have small bumps on m face around the cheek bone, nose, and
forehead areas. They are they same color as my skin, and they are very annoying.
Also, my skin gets VERY red, between the brows, and around the nose. do you know
the cause of these problem and how can i treat them?

thanks,
Shirley
kristen  - re: Shirley   |2010-01-29 10:53:10
So the bumps are flesh tone or are they red which is the same colour as your
sensitive skin? I assume flesh-tone. I think these are what we call
"cholesterol deposits" they are little bumps full of sebum but are not
pimples.

You can extract them with a needle, but I recommend getting a
professional to do this. They are caused by petroleum-based skincare or too muc
fat in the diet. If it is not this - they can be the makings of a mole or skin
tage - it depends on how big they are and what they look like. Feel free to
email me a photo.

As for the redness, these are irritated areas where we have
made teh skin delicate from the abrasion of blow our noses or waxing/ plucking
our brows (usually). You need a good rich cream to protect your skin against
this inflammation. Something liek teh Aloe Vera Cream from Martina Gebhardt.
If you can broken capillaries in these areas, you can also consider IPL. IPL is

greg  - Rosecia   |2010-02-05 11:35:52
I break out on the side of my nose with reddness along with small bumps.
Recently (30 days) I have reddness on my forehead (t-zone). It's probably
rosecia. I have used various skin products but none so far have improved the
condition. What would you recommend to control or eliminate it.

Greg
kristen  - re: greg - Rosacea   |2010-02-08 12:30:07
Rosacea is usually characterized by a burning sensation with prolonged flushing
on the face. Does your skin burn? Or is it itchy? Do the bumps form a
whitehead? Are they painful at all?

If you have not already done so, I
recommend you use natural cleansing, toning and moisturizing products that are
free of petroleum and detergents to help reduce sensitivity. Please let me
know a little bit more about your skin issues so I can be sure that I am
recommending you products best suited to your needs.
gmonelli616@aol.com  - SECOND MESSAGE   |2010-01-25 13:51:09
I had written to you a while back, but haven't received a response yet. Please
look up my account and let me know if there are any oral supplements I can add
to my skincare regimen...Your loyal customer, Gina Casey
kristen  - re:   |2010-01-25 16:26:53
Gina,
I am so sorry - as you can see if you scroll through this message board,
I did not receive a reply posting.
In my response to your request fro oral
recommendations, I asked if your skin had changed post-preganancy or if it had
gotten better or worse.
Without this info, I would probably recommend neem and
turmeric capsules. They are both anti-inflammatories and blood cleansers which
also act as a anti-bacterial for the body and skin.

You may also want to do a
liver cleanse with milk thistle drops if you find yoru skin is very aggravated.
You thanked me for the last recommendations I gave you, did they improve your
skin?
Lisa   |2010-01-22 10:12:05
My face seems to be very red and dry in the t-zone area. Is there anything I can
do to get rid of this. My chin is the worst and looks much redder than the rest.
Sometimes it is very irritated and burns.
kristen  - re: Lisa   |2010-01-22 10:50:23
Is the a long-term skin condition or something which has recently come up? It
sounds like rosacea from what you are describing, unless this is an acute issue.
I will recommend some things as soon as I get your reply. Also, what are you
using on your skin right now?
Cathy  - Teenage Son's Acne   |2010-01-21 20:02:05
My sixteen year old son suffers from acne and he is very worried about having
scars in the future. We eat an organic diet and essentially no junk food or pop.
Have tried lots of natural skincare (suki, mychelle etc with no luck). He wants
to see a dermatologist but I am very reluctant to take this approach. Do you
have any recommendations for helpful treatments and products. Thanks!
kristen  - re: Cathy   |2010-01-22 11:00:29
Are you in Toronto? I would recommend bringing him in for a consultation. Acne
is not only topical - have you read the acne section of this site? It decribes
that there are so many factors which can be aggravating this. It could be liver,
excess heat or dehydration. As for the scars, our Collagen elastin HCH serum
excellent in preventing scars. Our Organic Rosehip oil is also excellent as
Rose hip oil is fades scars, skin marks and dark spots. And the oil will not
make him break out more if he uses it every second night only. But the Collagen
needs to be used every day and night after he cleanses. But I do think seeing
his skin is best. If you cannot make it in, can you email me photos of his skin
so I can se what type of break outs he has? kristen@pureandsimple.ca.
Cathy  - Teenage Son's Acne   |2010-01-22 14:44:50
Thanks so much. Yes, I can bring him in for a consultation. Do I ask for you?
Please advise as he is bugging me to bring him to a dermatologist which I would
like to avoid. Downtown location is most convenient for me but am willing to
bring him to whoever has most experience in dealing with this.
Cathy  - Teenage son   |2010-01-22 18:21:50
Actually, your Yonge spa is close to me also. But like I said, I'll go wherever
you suggest for consult and treatment with someone who specializes in acne.
Thanks again!! I'm eager to get him going with this.
kristen  - re: Cathy   |2010-01-25 09:46:50
Cathy, if you go to the Yonge and Eglinton spa or the King and Bathurst spa, I
recommend booking a complimentary skin analysis with Amy Hu. She is an
esthetician who is also a doctor of natural medicine. We are so lucky to have
her. Just make sure to tell her you would like some internal recommendations as
well because some clients do not want us to tell them how to eat, live etc so I
would emphasize this in the consult.
Cathy   |2010-01-25 13:20:22
Thanks!!!

Do you know if the Lakshmi Kohl Liners are lead free? It's especially important
if using on the waterline. Thank you :)
kristen  - re: nc   |2010-01-22 11:03:34
Our liners do not have lead in them. if you would like, please email us at
spa@pureandsimple.ca and request someone write up and send you an
ingredients list.
Carolyn  - finding the right sun screen   |2010-01-21 10:48:42
I need help finding the right sun screen for my skin. I have sensitive skin
along with rosacea, oily in the T zone.
kristen  - re: Carolyn   |2010-01-22 11:02:31
I highly recommend our Pure + Simple SPF 30 - for Sensitive Skin Types. It is
formulated for very sesnitive skin and most of my rosacea clients are using it.
You only need a small amount for the face - and it will not make you oily if you
use approx half a pump. Use it over moisturizer. Do you have a good one for
your inflammation?
